FAQ

What is the OYSA?

The OYSA is the Oregon Youth Soccer Association. This is the governing body of youth soccer in Oregon.

What does the Club season look like?

The soccer season in Oregon runs May-April. Tryouts usually take place the first week of May. Teams will practice two or three times a week starting at the end of May and will continue through mid December at which point teams take a few weeks off over the holidays although some of the younger teams might take a longer break starting closer to Thanksgiving. They will begin practices again mid January and go through the end of April. Over the summer teams will usually play in a couple local weekend tournaments. Teams will then play in an 8-12 game league in the fall and another 8-12 game league in the spring. Teams will also participate in a Cup Tournament which will be another 3-6 games either at the conclusion of their fall league if they play in the Presidents or Founders cup or at the conclusion of the spring league if they play in State Cup. During league play and Cup Tournaments for teams U11-U19 games can be on either Saturdays or Sundays. Teams typically won’t play on both days over the weekend, but it could happen from time to time that a team has a game on both Saturday and Sunday of the same weekend a couple of times throughout the season. Teams run fairly independently in the sense that each coach will choose which days/times their team will practice throughout the year. Please keep in mind that practice schedules are not set in stone for the duration of the season. While we understand it takes a lot to juggle a family’s schedule, practice days and times could shift from time to time depending on field availability, the coaches personal schedule etc. We ask coaches to give their teams as much advance notice as possible of any changes to the training schedule. There are a couple of summer tournaments that the club highly recommends but teams will decide independently which tournaments they would like to participate in over the summer.

What if my player is U10 or below but on a year round team?

Teams U10 and below will play in the OYSA Development league. In this league, all games will be on Sundays at the same location. They always have one location at Delta Park and the additional location changes from season to season. Past locations have included Sherwood Middle School (the old Sherwood High School), Century High School and THPRD.

How are the players divided?

In club soccer teams are formed by birth year, not by grade. Each birth year is assigned an age group for the duration of the season which resets each May. Players will be on a team and play against other teams with players that were born the same year as they were. Here is a link to the US Youth Soccer age group chart. Please make sure you are referencing the 2022/23 season.

What do the Club dues include?

The club dues includes the coach’s salary, all field costs, fall and spring league fees, one cup tournament for teams U11 and above or one summer tournament for teams U10 and below, and all administrative costs for the 2022/23 season that runs May 2022-April 2023.

Are there additional expenses beyond club dues?

Players will need to purchase the uniform kit that is available online through our online store. Teams will be responsible for all expenses associated with any team events, registration fees if they decide to play futsal or indoor soccer over the winter as well as any coaches expenses associated with possible travel. They will also be responsible for all costs associated with summer tournaments, except for the tournament registration that is covered by the club for teams U10 and below.

Is there financial assistance available?

Yes, we have limited financial aid available. Families must apply and submit all necessary documentation to be considered. Submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance.

Do you offer a sibling discount for your competitive program?

Yes, the first sibling will pay full price, the second sibling will receive a 20% discount, the 3rd and 4th siblings receive a 30% discount.

Is there travel involved?

Most of our teams will play 95-100% of their games in the Portland Metro area however, some of our older teams (U13 and above), will be expected to travel from time to time throughout the year, mostly here in the Northwest.

How does team bracketing work?

Each team is placed in an appropriate level bracket based on skill level. It is important that a team is placed in the appropriate level bracket where they are able to find a good mix of challenge and success. We want our teams to play teams that test our ability, but also ones that we are able to find some success as well. Team placement will be decided by the coach, Club Directors as well as OYSA guidelines. The OYSA typically has tiers. The top, most competitive tier is Premier. There is usually a Gold and Silver bracket. Then there is Division 1 and Division 2 tiers. These divisions are typically divided again into two or three more brackets, red and white for the girls and Blue, Green and White for the boys.

What is DPL?

DPL stands for Development Player League. This is an all girls league that our top teams (U13-U19) participate in along with the local OYSA league. For these teams, there is some travel involved to Washington and Idaho plus one out of state tournament.

Where do teams train?

Our main fields are Cook Park (grass), Tigard High School (turf), Twality Middle School (turf) and Tualatin High School (turf). We use Cook Park as much as possible in the spring, summer and early fall, but once it starts raining for the winter we move to one of our turf fields.

What are Cup Tournaments?

There are three different Cup tournaments. There is State Cup, which is usually for Premier Division teams, President’s Cup that is for Division 1 teams and Founders Cup that is typically for Division 2 teams. This tournament consists of a few games of bracket play and if your team makes it out of their bracket they will play in the quarter finals, semi-finals then in the tournament final if they continue to win. U11-U14 teams play Presidents Cup and Founders Cup in the fall at the concussion of their fall league while State Cup for U11-U14 teams is in the Spring at the concussion of the spring league. State, Presidents and Founders Cups are all in the spring for U15-U19 teams. There are no cup tournaments for teams U10 and below.

Can my player be placed on a team with his/her friends?

Players are placed on teams based on birth year and skill level. Our Directors place each player where they feel the player will thrive and will get the most development. Players that would like to play with their friends should look into our recreational program.

Can my player also play recreational soccer?

Players U10 and below are allowed to also play recreational soccer, bu unfortunately, players U11 and above that play for one of our club teams are not able to play recreational soccer as well. The recreational league has had trouble with teams stacking club players on their team just to win games so they do not allow players to play in both programs.
